New research into the costs of funeral services across Australia have highlighted the large fluctuations between different service providers in each City.

Findings of a new finder.com.au analysis of funeral pricing data, has found Sydney as the country’s priciest City to die in, with the average ceremony costing $8357. It was closely followed by Perth at $7584, while Brisbane took out the third most expensive spot at $7505. The cheapest city to organise a funeral in is Hobart, at only $6832 for the average service. Overall, the average funeral in Australia costs $7449, although Melbourne and Darwin were left out of the analysis because of a lack of data.

According to finder.com.au, the findings were the result of analysis of FuneralPlanner data, which looked at the starting cost of funerals from over 25 providers. FuneralPlanner is an online website (owned by InvoCare) that provides customised quotes, only from InvoCare owned funeral brands. InvoCare is an ASX-listed funeral company that controls 40 percent of the funeral industry market with over 30 brands including White Lady, Simplicity, Guardian, Hansen & Cole and W.N. Bull.

However, in a report released from the University of Sydney Business School in 2017, analysis of more than 100 funeral service providers found that the average national price of a budget funeral ranged between $4132 and $5646 depending on whether buyers sought out service quotes online or directly from funeral directors.
