Funeral Directors in NSW have started transitioning to new rules which make it easier for people in Sydney to access price information when planning a funeral.

From the 1 February 2020, Funeral directors in the NSW must comply with a new information standard for funeral goods and services. Under previous NSW Fair Trading Regulations, funeral homes were only required to disclose a price list for a basic funeral service – and only if they offered one.

Under the new rules, all funeral directors will need to prominently display itemised pricing information for certain goods and services at their place of business and on their website. The price of the least expensive package for the burial or cremation of a body must also be displayed.

Now, all funeral providers in NSW must ensure that customers are provided with:

  • information about their ‘basic funeral’ option if they have one, its cost and what it covers, by giving a ‘basic funeral notice’
  • an itemised quote before entering into any funeral arrangement
  • an itemised statement of the goods and services provided and their costs before accepting final payment.

One of the first funeral directors in NSW to comply with the new standard is Guiding Light Funerals. Mary Kakaroubas, Chief Executive Officer of Guiding Light Funerals said, ‘we welcomed the new standards with open arms and had no hesitation in updating our website to provide full disclosure of our prices. It has been a long time coming for consumers as well as to creating a level playing field and a more competitive market for our industry.

Peter Erceg, owner eziFunerals, says: “Funeral consumers in Australia have been clear in what they want from funeral directors and they have been clear about what they expect from us at eziFunerals.”

”We are pleased to partner with Independent Funeral Directors, such as Guiding Light Funerals, who do not exploit customers at their time of grief. Being able to get fair, open and transparent prices before speaking with a funeral director allows customers to consider all their options without the pressure of a sales focused environment”.

A full copy of the new information standard can be found is prescribed under Division2, Part 2 of the Fair Trading Regulation 2019. The Regulation is available via the NSW Fair Trading website.
