CHOICE Australia, have just released their latest instalment into the funeral industry, which supports eziFunerals ongoing concerns for consumers and independent funeral homes.
In the second of a four-part investigation into the funeral industry, CHOICE Australia look at how much funerals cost, and how businesses control the way we grieve. They investigate how that vulnerability can be exploited by an industry that dictates how we say farewell to our loved ones, and builds its profits on massive markups and a lack of price transparency.
The investigation of funeral providers by CHOICE has found a widespread lack of transparency, with high prices, varying costs and some sellers taking days to provide customers with quotes.
Key findings from the CHOICE report include:
- The two biggest funeral providers in Australia (InvoCare and Propel Funeral Partners) are ASX-listed companies that account for a third of the entire market
- Some funeral homes charge high prices with incomplete cost breakdowns, extreme markups on coffins, and opaque “professional services” costing thousands of dollars
- Quotes for the cheapest option, a direct cremation with no service, ranged in cost from $2400 to $5600 in a mystery shop of funeral homes.
