CAN I CHANGE FUNERAL DIRECTORS

Did you know, you can choose your preferred funeral director even if your loved one has been taken into the care of another funeral director?

When a death occurs in an aged care home the manager must arrange for your loved one to be taken into the care of a local funeral director.  If this is not the funeral director of your choice you can arrange for your loved one to be transferred to your preferred funeral director as soon as possible.

If the death occurs at home you will need to arrange for your loved one to be taken into a funeral director’s care.  You can call any funeral director at that time of need understanding that when you have had time to decide you can make arrangements for your loved one to be transferred to your chosen funeral director.

We recently spoke to Chris Cullen, Funeral Director, Ian J Arthur & Sons about this common funeral misconception by consumers.

“Most people we meet don’t know they can change funeral directors after their loved one has been taken into the care of another funeral home”, he said.

“I recently spoke to a gentleman whose mother had passed away 3 hours earlier in an aged care facility. He was living interstate and his mother was in Sydney. He rang his former Pastor here in Sydney who recommended Ian J. Arthur & Sons to care for the mother’s funeral.”

“Unfortunately the nursing home was anxiously waiting for the family to engage a funeral director as they needed the mother to be transferred that evening. In the rush, and not having previously considered what funeral director they would use, another family member engaged a different funeral director.  At that point unfortunately the family felt that their choice was locked in.”

Chris said, “Sadly they probably paid more for the funeral compared to using Ian J. Arthur & Sons and its quite likely that we would have provided a higher quality of personal service for them.”

The moral of the story … if you, or someone you know has an elderly relative living in an aged care facility, you should make enquiries with funeral directors now.

If you have not chosen a funeral director then take time to do this ensuring you have chosen the correct one for you and your family to work with.  Once you have made your decision, arrangements can then be made to transfer your loved one.
